The First School

The first school was established in 1830. This was a one room log building located about 1/2 mile west of town. Mr. William Maupin, of Fayette, was the first teacher. This school was known as a public school. It operated for several years teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic.

This school was located 1/2 mile west of the current Middle Grove School building on the south side of Highway M within 50 years of the road. The school location is at the western edge of the Brown property. Record in abstract prior to 1850.
