Garrett School

A Model Country School

Madison Times, September 12, 1912

Garrett district in the southwest corner of Union township, with a valuation of $65,000 and a tax levy of .40 cents, a heating plant and a teacher salary of $62.50 a month, has the model country school of Monroe Co., and is declared by Supt. Carter to be the most progressive district in the county. This is due to 2 facts; first, the ability of the teacher Mrs. Robertson (who loves her work) and 2nd, the interest and enthusiasm of a board, made up of young and aggressive men, O. M. Featherston, J. J. Winn and S. Judd. To show their interest in school work, they attended the county teachers institute at Paris in a body. A few more districts like Garrett and a few more boards made up of the kind of men it has elected, and the problems of the country school would be settled.
