Gene was born on December 27, 1954, in Mexico. He graduated from high school at the top of his class and was a member of the National Honor Society. He earned a masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri and worked for a time in Overland Park, KS. Upon receiving an educational grant, he moved to Cincinnati, OH and studied toxicology for one year. He returned to Columbia, and worked in a laboratory at the University of Missouri Hospital where he became proficient in computer skills including the maintenance of hardware and the development of software. His skills in computer hardware and software programming were self taught. Computer programming captured his imagination and subsequently provided a pathway to a new career. He enjoy square dancing, playing the dulcimer, the English concertina and contra dancing. He published three volumes of what he called “Dizzy Dancers” and dancers around the world have been and will continue to swing with joy for many years to come because of his extraordinary talent and the sheer number of dances (contras, squares and mixers) he wrote. Gene was also in demand in the Midwest, and later, after moving to North Carolina, on the east coast as a caller. Although he was a preeminent caller and choreographer, Gene’s first love was simply dancing. In Durham, he took up yet another dance form, swing dance and met another love, Jenny Gray Glasson. Gene and Jenny were on October 28, 2000, and were blessed with a beautiful son, Macon John, on November, 2001. They made their home in Durham, NC. Gene was a self-reliant, quiet, kind, modest and gentle man. With this loving support, Gene was able to continue to work productively and enjoy his home, garden and family until his final days. His passing was peaceful and graceful. Everyone who knew and loved Gene and Jenny brought loving support to the Hubert family in his last days.
