Milligan Cemetery

 Located in Middle Grove

Francis Marion Milligan was John C. Milligan’s son and was a soldier in the United States Army. He died at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1873. There is a fantastic legend connected with his burial. He is reputed to have been buried at Fort Leavenworth and later disinterred and his body returned to Middle Grove. It is alleged that he buried in a lead casket and the body was in perfect condition upon arrival in Middle Grove, excepting that in transit the body had turned slightly to one side. The glass was removed to straighten the body and it immediately disintegrated into ashes, or dust.
