Florida Presbyterian Church

The Florida Presbyterian Church building, erected in 1888. The 100th anniversary of the church body is being observed Aug 24.

The 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the Florida Presbyterian Church will be observed with special services on Sunday, August 24. Plans have been made for a service at 11:00 a.m., a basket dinner at noon on the grounds and an afternoon service at 2:00 o’clock. Invited are all former ministers, members, relatives and friends.

The church was organized in 1869 with 45 charter members. The present building, constructed in 1888, was built by early settlers who had come to this area from Virginia and Kentucky. On the Centennial Committee are Mrs. Gillam Street, Mrs. J.W. Minor and Mrs. Bruce Carpenter, Sr., who are being assisted by many others.

Submitter’s Note: This church fell apart when they tried to move it because of the construction of the Mark Twain Lake.  They built a new brick structure in the town of Florida and this church is still active today.  The unique story about this church is they share a minister with the Florida Methodist Church, just a couple of blocks away (if you can call them blocks).  Both congregations meet in the Presbyterian Church building on one Sunday and the next Sunday they meet in the Methodist Church (there is a schedule when there is a fifth Sunday); it is the same minister in both churches.
