Three Pioneers Who Made History

James Vaughn

This fine old pioneer citizen came to Monroe county in 1829 from Lincoln county, Kentucky , buying land 8 miles southeast of Paris at $1.25 an acre. His wife, Isabel Davis Vaughn, rode all the way from Kentucky to their new home on horseback, carrying a baby in her lap.

Rev. Anderson Wood

Pioneer Monroe County Minister, located in Paris from 1835 to 1845.

Joseph Sproul

Builder of the first water mill in Monroe county and pioneer citizen of the Strother community. He was the grandfather of James T. Sproul, owner of the Paris Custom Mills.
